Chapter 4

Darlene hadn’t been back to LA since she returned home to Kearney last summer, completely defeated. Now she was preparing to get back to the place where she had spent most of her days in the past few years. It used to fill her with joy as she began to ready herself for the journey ahead, but she had become a real daughter of Kearney. So much so, that leaving now seemed more like a burden than anything else. She didn’t know how long she would be able to go without Doug. Could she even be away from him?

She packed with that feeling of nostalgia crawling through her. Carol had noticed it earlier and made sure to leave her to her thoughts. Sometimes when Darlene got in one of her moods, she was best left alone and Carol tried to do that now. Darlene whistled a familiar tune as she folded some of her clothes and threw them in the box, her sad eyes following the motions she was making languidly. The old shop which they hadn’t sold yet was sure to be all dusty now. She didn’t even know where she was going to start, but she would start wherever and see where it got her.

“You know he’s not going anywhere, right?” Carol asked, unable to suppress the desire to talk to Darlene. She wanted to reassure her that although her worries may be valid, she was definitely not going to lose her man in the short period of time she would be in L.A. “You’ve always loved L.A.,” Carol continued.

“I guess I did, but I think Kearney is growing on me,” Darlene said.

“It’s not Kearney that is growing on you, I think it’s Doug Egan. I want to love someone that much sometime during the course of my life, you know? I want love. I want everything you have on a different plate.” Carol said. Darlene chuckled and hugged her.

“Your turn will come and when it does, it will be mighty beautiful,” Darlene said and then returned to her packing. Carol sat on the bed, watching Darlene put her clothes together as she prepared for her move.

“What’s that noise?” Darlene asked, turning to the window to look out. Doug was standing outside beside Weston with a bouquet of flowers in his hand. His head was tilted upwards and he looked towards her window without a sign of moving into the house. Carol flew down the stairs and out to where he was standing. She was all smiles and bouncy on her feet.

“Doug!” she cooed.

“Hi, Carol. How are you?” he said, hugging her lightly.

“I’ve been good. Do you think you could bring me these flowers when she’s gone? We’ll just have to get her permission of course,” Carol laughed. Doug moved his right hand away from the bouquet and handed a separate bunch of flowers to Carol which made her smile even broader. The two were standing side by side when Darlene made her way down the stairs and stood staring at the two of them.
